Reykjavík Energy owns Elliðavatnsland, which covers a large section of Heiðmörk. In this area you will find Gvendarbrunnar and other water extraction areas of Veitur Utilities, a subsidiary of Reykjavík Energy. These are an extremely important resource, providing fresh water to 60% of the Icelandic population.
Heiðmörk is a popular area for outdoor activities on the outskirts of the city with a diverse landscape and woodlands which the Reykjavík Forestry Association has cultivated since the middle of the last century, in collaboration with Reykjavík Energy and the City of Reykjavík. In many places you will find sheltered coves and lush groves which guests and hikers can enjoy.
There is also diverse birdlife in the area, particularly around Lake Elliðavatn and Myllulækjartjörn. Heiðmörk is a good place for picking berries and the growth of mushrooms has increased with the added density and expansion of the forest. Hiking paths, which in the winter also serve as cross-country skiing and cycling paths, have also been created.
