VOR Reykjavik Energy Research Fund

The role of Reykjavik Energy’s Research Fund (VOR) is to support scientific research related to Reykjavik Energy’s field of work, with an emphasis on the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals that are a priority at any given time in accordance with the company's policy.

Today, Reykjavik Energy focuses on the following Sustainable Development Goals:

  • Clean water and sanitation
  • Affordable and clean energy
  • Climate action
  • Responsible consumption and production
  • Gender equality

Applications for funding from VOR are advertised in two categories, study grants (applied engineering students, and master's and doctoral students) and project grants. The maximum amount for study grants is 1.250.000 ISK for applied engineering and master's students and 5.000.000 ISK for doctoral students. The maximum amount for project grants is 8.000.000 ISK. Applicants submit a description of their research project, explain the timeline and costs, and justify how the project relates to Reykjavik Energy's field of work and the Sustainable Development Goals that the company emphasizes.

The board of the fund determines allocations from VOR based on input from a professional council of experts. The members of the board are Gylfi Magnússon, the chairperson of the Board of Directors for Reykjavik Energy, Sævar Freyr Þráinsson, the CEO of Reykjavik Energy, and Kristín Ingólfsdóttir, the former president of the University of Iceland.

The application deadline for 2023 has passed. Notification of grant recipients for allocation 2023 is scheduled for November. Inquiries can be sent to vor@or.is. All applications will be answered and treated as confidential.
